Iceland is growing some new land on the Reykjanes Peninsula. An eruption in Geldingadalur is spreading lava all over the place. It looks amazing on the livestream, but I of course also wanted to see it in real life.
We took a plane from Akureyri - Reykjavík in the morning and flew over the eruption a few times. And same thing in the evening again on our way back to Akureyri.
In the beginning experts said the eruption would probably last only a few days or weeks, but according to the newest research it could also last for years. A similar eruption in Hawai'i lasted for 35 years!
When I took the plane I still thought it would be over in a few days, so I decided I just HAD to see it and fly there. But when it keeps going for a while I hope to hike there too some time. For now, these are the photos from the flight. Some of them are also for sale on print.
